Russia to Veto Any Unacceptable Syria Resolution in Coming Days

Russia’s envoy to the United Nations said that Moscow will use its veto to block any UN Security Council resolution on Syria that it deems to be unacceptable

Russia's envoy to the United Nations said on Wednesday that Moscow will use its veto to block any UN Security Council resolution on Syria that it deems to be unacceptable.

"If the text is unacceptable then we will vote against," Vitaly Churkin was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency. "We will not allow a text to be adopted that we consider to be incorrect and will lead to a deepening of the conflict. We are openly telling our partners this."

Earlier on Wednesday, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov stated that there will be no vote during the coming days on the UN draft on Syria.

"Attempts are being made to find a text that is acceptable to all sides and would help find a political solution for the situation in Syria. Therefore there is going to be no vote in the next days," Gatilov told Interfax news agency.

The agency also quoted Russia's envoy to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov as saying that the draft was missing the most important thing: "a clear clause ruling out the possibility that the resolution could be used to justify military intervention in the Syrian affairs from outside. For this reason I see no chance this draft could be adopted.”
